Delegation Skills

Why is Delegation Skills training needed in a law firm?

Passing on work down the lawyer hierarchy is a part of law firm life. Delegating is fundamental to the working life of many lawyers. If a lawyer is not great at delegating it can hold the practice area back.

Delegation Processes & Skills

Delegating skills include:

  • Questioning skills
  • Understanding junior lawyers' work styles
  • Explaining skills
  • Following up on work delegating

A common feature of delegating in firms is where the work is delegated with insufficient detail or background. Many junior lawyers experience poor briefing and then are in a quandary as to whether to ask for clarification as they do not want to appear stupid.

CASE STUDY

A firm contacted us with an initial need for project management training. After discussions with both the training team and some of the lawyers involved it transpired that the real need was for delegation training.

The issue was that lawyers were not delegating enough or, well enough for the more junior lawyers to complete the work satisfactorily.

We developed a half day session which focussed on how to decide who to delegate a piece of work to, how to delegate a piece of work and how to keep track of its progress. The session was designed around scenarios from the firm and gave room for discussion and practice.

The result was lawyers leaving the training understanding more about delegating and feeling better equipped to delegate work.

This development of delegation skills training can be totally adapted and designed according to the needs of your firm..
