Management Development
How do we approach the skills of management?
In law firms Partners are held in such high regard that it is vital that we start with understanding ourselves.
When so much can be drawn from every behaviour displayed it is crucial that we understand the impact we can have others before we develop our management skills.
At ITD we do this using the Thomas International PPA or commonly know as the DISC profile. We have chosen this system because:
- It works
- The Partner cannot second guess the required answer and try to manipulate the result, unlike other popular tools
- The questionnaire is a quick 7 minute on line exercise
- It is available in almost every language
Based on the premise that many lawyers start a training session with the conscious or subconscious thought of 'go on then train me', this approach opens their mind to at least be curious as to the result of the questionnaire.
Once we have opened their mind we can explore possibilities and benefits of improvement.
Short in depth sessions
We find that short sessions which go straight into detail on a subject are the best way to capture attention and foster development. A management development programme for lawyers would therefore need to be a number of small sessions linked with actions for review.
