Personal impact training – ITD

Personal impact training will help you develop the impact you want. It will work on your confidence in those situations where you want it most. Our unique approach to action planning works on your behaviours and is underpinned by proven behavioural science research, unlike any other training provider, giving you the best opportunity to implement the behavioural changes you desire.

Personal impact training

Personal impact training is required when we need to develop our interpersonal skills. Today’s work place requires us to be technically proficient in our specialist area, but it also requires us to connect and influence other people. We need to influence our seniors on courses of action. We need to influence colleagues. We need to negotiate. Personal impact forms part of our ability to influence in our day to day work.

What is personal impact training?

Personal impact training specifically focuses on developing your impact with other people. It firstly increases your awareness of where impact is derived; what elements of the work day have most impact on other people. Training will then give you ideas on how to take control of these elements and then to improve your performance of them.

Personal impact training with ITD

Our approach to personal impact training goes two steps further than other providers. Firstly at ITD our style is to run workshops rather than courses. The difference is that workshops are more interactive and the participants are developing their skills as they learn.

Workshops are a blend of training and coaching. We find workshops have far more impact and lead to people developing their confidence and their skills in the session.

The second way we are different is in our approach to action planning; making sure ideas taken from the training are implemented back in the workplace. Our unique behavioural change action planning tool will ensure you agree practical and realistic actions at the close of the session.

Typical challenges of participants on ITD personal impact training

  1. “I sometimes find explaining myself in meetings quite difficult, especially when there are strong characters and senior people in the meeting.”
  2. “I don’t seem to make a very good first impression with new people whether they be internal or external. I think I’m nice enough, it’s just they don’t seem very impressed.”
  3. “I find it hard to connect with some people. It’s not that I don’t like them it’s just that there’s no feeling of a connection.”
  4. “I need to be more assertive. I know how to be assertive, I just don’t seem to be able to do it.”
  5. “I have been told in my appraisal that in order to advance in the organisation I need to raise my profile, and I’m not sure how to do that.”

How will we develop personal impact training to suit your needs?

  1. All our training is adapted to suit the needs of the client. The first step is to make sure we understand your specific needs and to draft this as a set of required outcomes for the training.
  2. We will then draft the personal impact training agenda and walk you through how the content will be delivered to get your approval and tweak where required.
  3. On the day of the personal impact training we will always check in with the participants to see what they want to get from it, and ensures this aligns with expectations, and we can then tweak the content if required.

Personal impact training case study

Client

This Biotech company is highly successful and operates globally.

Background

The finance team of this business have similar challenges to many finance departments; people in other departments not understanding the importance of the work the finance team does, or if they do, not translating this understanding in to actions. This in itself has an impact on invoicing, cash flow etc.

Need

The training need was simple. To help the finance team develop their impact and influence when working with colleagues in different parts of the business. The desired result was for their internal clients and colleagues would change their behaviour and deliver finance requirements in a more timely fashion. This is a common challenge for finance departments and not an easy one to resolve.

Activity

We developed a programme of half day workshops with a blend of discussion, idea instruction and application to real situations. Each person developed their own plan of actions for their internal clients. The agenda included:

  • Framework for developing awareness of areas for personal impact
  • Choosing your easiest areas for development
  • Developing assertive behaviours
  • Better understanding your target audience
  • Understanding what the targets will consider impactful
  • Creating influencing strategies
  • Developing more impact in meetings
  • Creating an approach to emails
  • Using nudge to influence
  • Action planning on specific challenges and with specific people

We followed up with the participants on their actions between workshops. Good practice and successes were therefore shared in the team.

Personal impact can be derived from a number of areas:

Body language – Talks to other people’s subconscious. Our body language needs to reinforce the words we are choosing. If we want to have impact we need to consider our body language. For example keeping eye contact when trying to persuade or influence someone.

What you say – Our choice of words and what we choose not to say can greatly influence how we are perceived. Planning and preparing what we are going to say can be vital in getting it right.

How you say it – The intonation in our words can also have huge impact in how we are perceived. Consciously working on the pace or speed of our communication can work well. Too fast and we seem hurried and out of control. Too slow and we seem just that. The rise and fall of our voice can engage or turn people off. Monotone never works, but too much emphasis on every word appears insincere. The right balance of a rising and falling emphasis is engaging to listen to.
