Motivating the Team
Does motivation matter in a law firm?
Yes. It matters in every organisation. Motivation answers the question, 'what is it that makes you strive to do an outstanding job?'
Highly motivated people can produce exceptional work and deliver world class service to their clients, whether internal or external.
The reverse is also true. De-motivated people tend to do the opposite. We can see de-motivated people taking more time off sick, not putting all of their ability into a job and possibly looking to move organisation.
What motivates people?
That is the $64,000,000 questions. And the answer is as simple as it is complex. It is different for every person.
There are some very easy ways to de-motivate most people, here is a few:
- Don't listen to your staff
- Ignore their suggestions
- Don't take your staff seriously
- Take all the credit for their ideas
- Give the best projects to your favourites
- Be inconsistent
And the opposites tend to be good ideas for motivating people
CASE STUDY
An organisation contacted us to help in achieving their targets.
One of the key issues was that the team were de-motivated by the perception that there was no chance of them achieving their objectives for the year. This had a knock on effect on their potential earnings.
Whilst money is not always a motivator a sense of loss of money often can be.
There were also many underlying issues which were eating away at people's motivation. The degree to which each issue affected each person varied. But everyone seemed to affected by something and when asked why they had not raised these with their manager the reply was 'there's no point because she won't listen'.
So the solution was fairly straight forward:
- Listen to their issues and either do something about them or manage their expectations if nothing can be done.
- Create a better culture for the team to work in
- Train the behaviours which need amplifying to get to the target
It was a bit more complicated than this in the detail but the result was a fantastic in that they exceeded their target by over 30%.
