Supervisory Skills
Why is supervisory skills training needed in a law firm?
For those people who decide to take the step to be a supervisor or team leader, it will often be their first experience of managing people. The fundamental change is that prior to this step people tend to achieve their goals through their own effort, whereas this role involves achieving things through other people's efforts.
One of the usual challenges is with delegating. Very often the barriers to delegating to the team are:
- I could do it quicker myself
- It will take too long to explain
- I will do a better job myself
- I don't have time to explain
Training will help people to get the foundations of becoming a supervisor right first time.
What ideas could we expect to walk away with from this training?
This can vary according to the individual circumstances, some of the typical comments we get include:
- It's good to see how to establish a foundation to the working relationship
- I like the ideas on how to handle the issue that I have been promoted above my colleagues
- Reviewing how we set and manage expectations was really useful
CASE STUDY
A firm contacted us with a need for training for first line managers in all business services departments in all four offices.
We met with a number of the target group to discuss their challenges and discover where the training might be useful. Of course we had our expectations as to what the needs would be, but it is still very useful to understand their specific challenges.
It was interesting to get the different needs from the different offices. One of these was in managing people who were much older, more experienced and had been in that specific office for many years; especially when the supervisor wanted them to do something differently.
We developed a training intervention in two parts separated by a four week gap to allow for practice. This involved looking at scenarios, practicing the skills and looking at specific live challenges from the participants.
The result was excellent feedback and we heard that the participants used the ideas from the training in their daily work.
This development of finance training can be totally adapted and designed according to the needs of your firm..
