Professional Business Communication
What is more important what we say or how we say it?
In a law firm it is vital that the words we use are clear, don't include unnecessary jargon and get the point across. But if the way in which these words are conveyed is distracting the message can be lost. How we communicate can be described as the vehicle which takes the message to the other person.
How quickly does it take you to drift off if someone is talking to you in a monotone voice? How long does it take for you to think of something else if the person communicating to you repeats their message? Communication skills are a set of behaviours we all use but few have been trained in. We are aware of how important they are, but how much time do we invest in improving our skills?
It is easy to see how important communication skills are when they are poor. Those who have experienced death by power point will know what we mean. Or if you have heard the phrase similar to, 'there are 14 reasons why this is important, one...'.
ITD approach to communication skills
We look at the participants real work situations and explore how to improve communication skills within the context of these scenarios. How to interrupt a colleague who never stops talking? How to get more from a lawyer who never has time for you. How to explain complex legal matter to someone who has no legal knowledge.
Communication Skills
What elements combine to make excellence in communication?
Here are just a few of the areas we could include in a communication skills workshop:
- Listening
- Empathy
- Questioning
- Clarity
- Good body language
- Clear purpose or objective
- Involving the other person / people
- Eye contact
- Mirroring
- and many many more..
